Bedwetting (also called nocturnal enuresis) can have many ups and downs. During this time, your child is learning how to wake up and go to the bathroom at night. Some nights, they may wake up dry and other nights, they may wake up with a wet bed. While it can be frustrating for both you and your child, it is completely common! In fact, according to Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, “bedwetting occurs in approximately 20% of children at five years of age.”

While bedwetting is challenging, there are ways to help make it a bit easier for both you and your child. Patience and time are key, but making some adjustments can make this process a little easier. Below, we’re sharing some ways to help your child by using a mattress protector or bed mat, as well as how Goodnites® Nighttime Underwear can help you and your child.

Add Protective Layers to your Mattress

If your child experiences bedwetting accidents, it may be helpful to protect their mattress.

Waterproof Mattress Cover

One of the easiest ways to protect your child’s mattress is with a waterproof mattress cover. They provide an absorbent and waterproof fabric layer that you simply place on top of their mattress. Typically made from breathable materials, bed-wetting mattress covers generally feature a plastic protective layer with padding and cords. This easily attaches to their bed and comes in a variety of sizes. They are also washable, so if an accident happens, you simply wash them and try again.

Goodnites® Disposable Bed Mats

Goodnites® Disposable Bed Mats can be a helpful addition to your child’s nighttime setup, working alongside mattress protectors to offer extra peace of mind. While mattress protectors help cover the entire bed, bed mats are designed to be placed in key areas where accidents are more likely to happen.

Featuring "Micro-Pocket Technology", a super absorbent core, and a leakage barrier, Goodnites® Disposable Bed Mats are designed to help protect sheets at night. The bed mats are also made with four easy-to-remove peel strips to help stay in place while being soft and quiet. Additionally, these bed mats are great for travel and on-the-go excursions, especially since other protective layers might be too bulky when traveling.

Snug Fitted Bedwetting Sheets

Another option for nighttime training is to use snug-fitted bed wetting bed sheets. Typically made from rubber or plastic, these sheets are waterproof and work to effectively stop moisture, so urine doesn’t absorb into your child’s bedding and/or mattress. They typically go over bed sheets.

Add Goodnites® Products to the Nighttime Routine

How to Wash Bedding after Bedwetting

If your child does have an accident and moisture leaks past or runs off the protective layer,, there are simple ways to effectively wash and clean their bedding:

Remove the protective layer from the bed.

Start by taking off any wet bedding or protective products, such as Goodnites® Disposable Bed Mats, Nighttime Underwear, or reusable bedding cover. Dispose of single-use products and set reusable items aside for washing. If you use a waterproof mattress cover, clean it according to the care instructions before putting it back on the bed.

Wash any wet bedding.

If moisture has reached the sheets or blankets, remove them and wash them as soon as possible to help prevent stains and odors.

Blot the mattress.

If moisture has reached the mattress, use a towel to press/lightly blot any urine that may have been absorbed into the mattress. You can also use a wet/dry vacuum to suck the moisture out of the mattress.

Neutralize the smell.

If the bed is soaked or odor seems to be lingering, sprinkle some baking soda on the pee-stained area. Aim to leave it on all-day as it works its magic and then vacuum up the rest. Repeat as needed.
